Getting Ready for Your First Therapy Session with Kindred Roots: A Guide

Deciding to take the plunge into therapy is a brave move, and we're thrilled to have you as a first-time client at Kindred Roots Therapy Inc. Everyone on our team is about creating a comfortable and welcoming space for your journey to emotional wellness.

To help you prep for your first session, here are a few tips to make the most out of your experience.

1. Get Real with Yourself

Before you step into our office (or log onto that video call), it's important to dig deep and figure out why you're seeking therapy. Maybe it's the stress that's been keeping you up at night, relationship issues, or just a general feeling that things could be better. Knowing your motivation will help you and your therapist get on the same page.

2. Find the Right Fit

Choosing the right therapist can be a bit like dating. You want someone you can connect with and who specializes in the things you're going through. At Kindred Roots, we're all about matchmaking. We'll pair you up with a therapist who's got the know-how and a personality that clicks with yours. That’s why we offer a free 15 minute initial consult. Think of it like speed dating. If, after that initial session, you’re not feeling a connection, it’s okay to try someone else until you find the one that really GETS you!

3. Tackle the Paperwork

We know paperwork isn't the most exciting thing, but it's important to get it out of the way. After you set up your account and book your first appointment we'll send you some intake forms and such – do your best to fill them out before your session. It helps your therapist get a head start on understanding your situation.

4. Realistic Expectations, Please

Therapy isn't a magic pill, and you won't leave your first session with all the answers. It's a process, and it takes time to build trust with your therapist and start making changes. Be patient with yourself and open to the journey.

5. Get Comfortable

Whether you're coming in-person or virtually, find a quiet, comfy spot where you won't be disturbed during your session. Never worry about what to wear, just be comfortable. At Kindred Roots, we’re all about showing each other our authentic selves. Can’t get out of your pyjamas? No judgment here.

6. Prep Your Thoughts

What's on your mind? Make a list of the things you want to chat about during your first session. It's easy to forget stuff in the moment, so jot them down to ensure nothing slips through the cracks. You might want to bring a notebook with you that has the list and you can take notes throughout your session too.

7. Keep It Real

In therapy, honesty is your best friend. Our therapists are pros at creating a safe, non-judgmental zone where you can be your true self. Don't be shy; share your thoughts, feelings, and experiences openly. Truly, there is nothing you can say that will shock us.

8. Brace Yourself for the Feels

Therapy can stir up some emotions, and that's perfectly normal. Your therapist is there to help you navigate those sometimes rocky waters. Trust the process. We will always have tissues or a pillow you can hug.

9. Be an Active Participant

Therapy isn't a one-way street. Get involved, ask questions, and do any "homework" your therapist suggests between sessions. Your progress depends on your commitment.

10. Post-Session Self-Care

After your session, take a moment for self-care. Reflect on what you discussed, practice some relaxation techniques, and treat yourself kindly. You've taken a big step toward a better you, and you deserve it.

Your first therapy session at Kindred Roots is a pivotal moment in your journey toward emotional wellness, understanding, and healing. Keep it real, stay open, and trust the process. We're here to support and guide you every step of the way. With your Kindred Roots therapist by your side, you'll be well on your way to a more grounded, happier, and healthier you.

We’re looking forward to seeing you.
