Episode 1: Ali’s Coming Out Story

You asked..and we listened..

In an exciting update, we want to introduce Unfiltered Therapists: A Kindred Roots Therapy Inc. Podcast!

This podcast is designed to pull the curtain back on the way our team actually talks about issues on mental health, current events, therapy trends, and of course, all around shooting-the-shit.

Each month, we will be sitting down with a team member to discuss a topic suggested by you!

For our first episode, in celebration of Calgary’s Pride Week, Ali had the opportunity to sit down with Allegra to discuss her coming out journey!

You can click the link below to listen to the episode on Spotify! We also wanted to write a blog post this week with some education on the LGBTQIA2S+ issues discussed in the episode.

Coming out is a deeply personal and transformative experience for individuals who identify as LGBTQIA2S+. It is a process of self-discovery and acceptance that can be both liberating and challenging. In this blog post, we will explore the concept of fluid sexuality, discuss the impact of compulsory heterosexuality (comp het), and provide guidance on supporting someone who has recently come out. Additionally, we will delve into the importance of being an ally and fostering an inclusive environment. Let's embark on this journey together and learn how we can create a more accepting world.

1. Understanding Fluid Sexuality:

Sexuality is a complex and multifaceted aspect of human identity. It is essential to recognize that sexuality can be fluid, meaning it can change or evolve over time. Many individuals may not fit neatly into traditional labels or may experience shifts in their attractions. Embracing fluid sexuality allows for personal growth and self-acceptance, acknowledging the diverse and unique experiences of individuals.

2. Compulsory Heterosexuality (Comp Het):

Compulsory heterosexuality refers to the societal expectation that everyone is heterosexual by default. It perpetuates the assumption that being straight is the norm, leading to the suppression of non-heterosexual identities. Understanding comp het helps us recognize the pressures and biases faced by those who don't conform to traditional heterosexual norms, fostering empathy and support for individuals who choose to come out.

3. Supporting Someone Who Has Recently Come Out:

Coming out is a significant moment in an individual's life, and support from loved ones can make a world of difference. Here are some ways you can provide meaningful support:

a. Listen and Validate: Create a safe and non-judgmental space for the person to share their experiences, fears, and emotions. Acknowledge their courage and validate their feelings.

b. Educate Yourself: Take the initiative to learn about LGBTQIA2S+ issues, terminology, and experiences. This will help you understand their perspective and avoid unintentionally causing harm.

c. Respect Privacy: Respect the person's right to disclose their identity on their own terms. Avoid outing them without their consent, as this can be an incredibly distressing and traumatizing experience.

d. Offer Resources: Provide information about LGBTQIA2S+ support groups, helplines, or online communities that can offer additional guidance and a sense of belonging.

4. Being an Ally:

Being an ally means actively supporting and advocating for LGBTQIA2S+ individuals. Here are some ways you can be an effective ally:

a. Educate Yourself Continuously: Stay informed about LGBTQIA2S+ history, current issues, and the challenges faced by the community. This knowledge will empower you to challenge stereotypes and biases.

b. Use Inclusive Language: Be mindful of the words you use and avoid assumptions about someone's gender or sexuality. Use gender-neutral language or ask individuals for their preferred pronouns.

c. Speak Up: Challenge homophobic or transphobic comments and behaviors when you encounter them. It’s much easier for an Ally to speak up on hateful comments than it is for the person who is affected by those comments. Be an advocate for equality and help create a safe and inclusive environment for all.

d. Amplify Voices: Share and promote the experiences, stories, and achievements of LGBTQIA2S+ individuals. Use your platform to raise awareness and foster understanding.

Remember..

Coming out is a personal journey that requires courage, self-acceptance, and support. Recognizing the fluidity of sexuality and understanding the impact of comp het can help us create a more inclusive society. By providing unwavering support, educating ourselves, and becoming allies, we contribute to a world where people can embrace their authentic selves without fear. Let us strive to be compassionate and accepting, building a future where everyone is celebrated for who they are.
