Podcast Episode 13: Supporting Children through High Conflict Divorce

All divorce is hard. But if your family is experiencing a divorce that includes a maladaptive parent, the situation is even more complicated and potentially volatile. In addition to managing all the confusion and emotion that comes with divorce, children with a high-conflict parent are faced with an additional struggle - the challenge of being in the care of a parent who is not able to meet the child’s emotional or psychological needs - not because the high-conflict parent doesn’t want to. But simply because they do not have the capacity to.

AJ Gajjar is an Alberta-based consultant that took her own experiences and combined them with her skill set as a child development specialist, trauma-informed parenting consultant, and children’s advocate to help parents identify, understand, and navigate a high conflict divorce while keeping the emotional and psychological needs of their children at the forefront.

In this conversation with Rayan Zaza, a registered psychologist on the Kindred Roots team, AJ helps us understand the best ways to support kids through this complicated process.

As you heard from AJ & Rayan’s conversation, you shouldn’t be expected to navigate any huge life transition, like a divorce, alone. Whether you need help for yourself, your children, or a family therapy session, all of Kindred Roots’ relatable, professional therapists are available for in-person sessions in Okotoks, Alberta. Virtual sessions are also available for residents of Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.
